Penult is, according to its developer, “a homebrew game for the Atari 2600“, a “work-in-progress RPG…in the style of the Ultima RPG series.” And, indeed, the Ultima influence can be felt quite strongly in the screenshots that have been released of the game:
Currently, there is a limited demo of Penult available, explore a “reduced” world map, including the starting city, one castle, and one dungeon. Progress through the demo can be saved (if you have an AtariVox or SaveKey attached to a controller, or if the analogous option is enabled in the Stella Atari emulator). The demo also features two display modes (color and monochrome), and is available in both NTSC and PAL formats; it is playable in the Stella emulator, or on original hardware through the use of either a Harmony Encore or a Unocart (with the latest firmware). The developer cautions that Penult is not compatible with Javatari, or the Atari Flashback Portable.
A manual for Penult is also available.
